Flight or bus: the short answer

For a stay of a few days, flying is almost always the right choice: about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 in the air, plus an hour's transfer, against more than ten hours by bus. The bus has two advantages: it costs only around €30, and an overnight ride saves you a night in a hotel. There is, however, no direct train between Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Option Door-to-door time Price Best for
Flight IST or SAW – Nevşehir (NAV), then shuttle about 3 h 30 to 4 h including check-in varies by date, compare short stays
Flight IST or SAW – Kayseri (ASR), then shuttle about 4 h to 4 h 30 varies, more flights and airlines short stays, wider choice of times
Night bus Istanbul – Göreme about 10 h 30 to 12 h from about 1,700 TL (around €30) tight budgets, travellers with flexible schedules

Prices checked in October 2026. Domestic air fares vary a lot depending on when you book: compare them on the airlines' websites rather than relying on an average price.

By air: Kayseri or Nevşehir

Two airports serve Cappadocia:

  • Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about forty kilometres from Göreme, or 40 to 50 minutes by road. It is the closest, but only two airlines link it to Istanbul: Turkish Airlines from Istanbul Airport (IST) and AJet from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Allow about 1 h 15 of flying time.
  • Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), just north of the city of Kayseri, about 1 h 15 by road from Göreme. It has many more flights: Turkish Airlines from IST, Pegasus and AJet from SAW. Allow about 1 h 25 to 1 h 30 of flying time.

Choose your departure airport first according to where you stay in Istanbul: IST is on the European side, SAW on the Asian side, and a mistake costs two hours of travel. Our guide to Istanbul's airports and the city centre explains how to reach each of them by metro or coach. For an early-morning flight, leave plenty of time: security checks start at the terminal entrance.

From the airport to Göreme

There is no convenient public transport between these airports and the villages of Cappadocia. Three options:

  • Shared shuttle: minibuses meet the main flights and drop each passenger at their hotel in Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp or Avanos. Book it in advance, often through your hotel, giving your flight number.
  • Private transfer, booked through your hotel or an agency, more expensive but direct.
  • Rental car, picked up at the airport, useful if you want to explore the valleys and underground cities on your own.

By night bus to Göreme

Several companies link Istanbul to Göreme, including Metro Turizm, the most frequent, Kamil Koç, Nevşehir Seyahat and Kapadokya VIP Turizm. The most convenient buses leave in the evening, between 20:00 and 23:00, arriving the next morning; allow about 10 h 30 on the road, sometimes more than 12 hours depending on the company and traffic. Tickets started at about 1,700 TL in October 2026.

Buses leave from several bus stations: Esenler (the main bus station on the European side, served by metro line M1) and Alibeyköy on the European side, Dudullu on the Asian side. Turkish coaches are comfortable, often with 2+1 seating, drinks served on board and regular stops.

Check that your ticket really says Göreme: some services stop at Nevşehir bus station, from where a company minibus or a dolmuş takes you on to the village. How to reach the bus station on Istanbul's public transport is explained in our guide to getting around Istanbul.

How many days in Cappadocia

Two nights there, so three days, is the reasonable minimum. The balloon flight takes place at sunrise and can be cancelled because of wind: two mornings give you a second chance. Two days are also enough to see the main sights in the north and south of the region.

  • Day trip: technically possible with an early-morning flight and an evening return, often sold as an organised tour by Istanbul agencies. You will see two or three sights, but no balloon, since it takes off at dawn. Only worth it if you truly have no other slot.
  • One night: a balloon flight is possible on the morning of the second day, with no margin if it is cancelled.
  • Two or three nights: the right pace, with one day for the valleys around Göreme, one for the underground cities and the Ihlara Valley, and time to walk.

To fit this trip around your stay in Istanbul, start from our Istanbul in 3 days itinerary and place Cappadocia before or after it.

The hot air balloon flight

Hot air balloons over the valleys of Göreme at dawn

The balloons take off at sunrise over the valleys around Göreme. Companies pick up their passengers at their hotel before dawn; the flight lasts about an hour, followed by a return to the hotel mid-morning.

Every morning, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) decides whether flights go ahead, depending on wind and weather. A green flag means flights are allowed, a yellow flag that they are delayed while the weather is monitored, a red flag that they are cancelled for the day. The authorities count about 220 flying days a year: cancellations are more frequent in winter, but no season is immune.

  • Book the flight for your first morning: if it is cancelled, most companies offer to move you to the next day, or else refund you. Have these terms confirmed when you book.
  • Book through a well-known company or your hotel, and be wary of touts offering very low prices in the street. Our guide to scams and safety in Istanbul covers the useful reflexes.
  • Price: the major companies advertise standard flights from about €130 to €140 per person in low season; prices rise sharply in spring and autumn, and for smaller baskets.

If you don't fly, the show is still beautiful from the ground: hundreds of travellers climb the hills above Göreme at daybreak to watch the balloons take off.

What to see in two days

Göreme Open Air Museum and its rock-cut churches

Around Göreme, in the north

  • Göreme Open Air Museum (Göreme Açık Hava Müzesi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a cluster of monasteries and rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes, at the edge of the village on the road to Ürgüp. Admission €20, plus €6 for the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), the best preserved. Open every day; arrive at opening time, before the groups.
  • The valleys: the Red Valley and the Rose Valley, to explore on foot, especially at sunset; Love Valley and its fairy chimneys.
  • Paşabağ and Zelve, with their multi-capped chimneys, and Avanos, a pottery town on the Kızılırmak river.
  • Uçhisar Castle, a rock pinnacle riddled with dwellings, with the widest view over the region.

In the south: underground cities and Ihlara

  • Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, two underground cities dug over several levels, where the inhabitants took refuge during invasions. The tunnels are narrow and low: avoid them if you are claustrophobic.
  • The Ihlara Valley, a green canyon lined with rock-cut churches, more than an hour's drive from Göreme, and the Selime monastery.

Agencies in Göreme sell these two days as guided minibus tours, often called the "Red Tour" (north) and the "Green Tour" (south). Without a car, this is the easiest way to see the distant sights; dolmuş, the local minibuses, also link Göreme with Uçhisar, Avanos, Ürgüp and Nevşehir.

When to go

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) bring pleasant temperatures for walking and the most reliable flying conditions. Summer is hot and dry during the day, but mornings stay cool for the balloons. In winter the Anatolian plateau is cold and often snowy: the landscapes are superb, but balloon flights are cancelled more often. For Istanbul itself, see our guide to the best time to visit Istanbul.
