What the sources say on 30 October 2026

Every site we read gives €20 for foreigners and a Friday closure to tourists; only one mentions a possible afternoon opening after the midday prayer, unconfirmed: do not count on it. Entry is free for Turkish citizens, worshippers coming to pray and children aged 8 and under; the Museum Pass Istanbul is not accepted. The 2024 rate has not been republished since: confirm it on the spot.

A resold ticket does not change the site's rules: hours, prayers and dress. It is worth it for the convenience of booking and paying ahead; compare with €20.

Prayers and dress

The building is cleared 15 minutes before each call and reopens to visitors after the service. Check the day's prayer times and aim for a slot away from midday. Shoulders covered, no shorts, a scarf for women (sold at the entrance), shoes off on the carpets; no flash, suitcases or umbrellas.

What you come to see

The early 14th-century mosaics and frescoes: the life of the Virgin and of Christ in the narthexes, the Deesis, the Anastasis of the funerary chapel. Our page: Holy Saviour in Chora. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.

Combine it with Fener and Balat

Walk down towards the Golden Horn: Balat and Fener, or the half-day guided Fener-Balat walk. The Theodosian Walls are a few streets away. Getting there: tram T4 to Edirnekapı. See also the churches you can visit.
