1-day Ephesus and Pamukkale by plane

This is the only tour that promises both sites in one day: about 12 hours, with flights, guide, lunch and entrance fees according to the listing, which shows 4.7 from 81 reviews. Drinks at lunch are extra and the entrance to the sacred pool at Hierapolis is often paid separately. Prices seen range from under $400 to over $530 depending on the listing: do not rely on a figure until you have opened the listing. Some travellers find the Pamukkale part too quick and report delayed flights. See the listing.

2-day Ephesus and Pamukkale with flights

The listings show a price of $381 on one version and $465 on another. The tour covers Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and Pamukkale, with a night on site. Note that one version says entrance fees are payable on top (about €45 for Ephesus, €20 for the House of the Virgin Mary, €35 for Pamukkale), while another lists them as included. Read the "included" line for the date you choose. See the listing.

2-day private Pamukkale and Ephesus

About $350 per person, struck through from $700 when we looked: the starting price looks promotional. The listing states domestic flights, hotel and airport transfers, one night with breakfast, two lunches, a licensed guide, museum entrance fees and the Cleopatra's Pool entrance. Dinner is not included. It offers a private group or a small group and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. One traveller says they could not reach the office at dawn and took a taxi to the airport: keep the operator's phone number. See the listing.

Private Ephesus with lunch

About $509 per person ($458 on a discounted reading), 4.8 from 53 reviews, about 15 hours. Return flights, guide, transfers, air-conditioned vehicle, entrance fees and lunch are listed, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. It covers only Ephesus, not Pamukkale. The listing is shown sometimes as private and sometimes as a small group of 10 at most: confirm this when booking. See the listing.

Ephesus and House of the Virgin Mary

About $405 ($450 on another version), about 12 hours, return flights and buffet included, free cancellation up to 24 hours before. It adds the House of the Virgin Mary, near Ephesus, but not Pamukkale. One version is shown as a private group: check this. The rating was not in the listings we read. See the listing.

What is not included and the pitfalls

  • Entrance fees: included on some listings, payable on site on others. Count about €45 for Ephesus and €35 for Pamukkale if they are not, according to one listing; the sacred pool at Hierapolis is often separate.
  • Length: a 12 to 15 hour day with two flights leaves little margin. A delayed flight shortens the visit.
  • Arrival airport: several tours land at İzmir or Denizli, then drive for over an hour. For Istanbul's airports, see Istanbul airports and the city centre.
  • Passports: some operators ask for your passport details in advance to issue the plane tickets. Also check entry requirements in our guide visa and entry to Turkey.
  • Private or group: the word "private" is used loosely on some listings. Confirm the group size.
  • Shopping stops: travellers complain of shops where they are pressed to buy; see our advice on scams and safety in Istanbul.

Which tour to choose?

Booking at the best time

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for walking sites with no shade; in summer the heat is strong at Ephesus and Pamukkale. Book early in high season: plane seats go quickly. Always leave a margin between the return flight's arrival time and your international flight.
