Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (Fener): Visiting the Church of St George
On the shore of the Golden Horn, in the Fener district, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is the seat of the patriarch, honorary spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church and of several hundred million faithful worldwide. The seat has been in the district since the early 17th century, and its church, St George (Aghios Georgios), dates in its present form from 1836. The complex, discreet behind its high walls, is modest in size but heavy with history. Visiting the church is free and takes about 30 minutes.
Highlights

The Church of St George
The patriarchate's main church, with a narrow nave and plenty of gilding. The interior is that of a Greek Orthodox church: a gilded wooden iconostasis, old icons, chandeliers and stalls. The patriarchal throne, which tradition dates to the Byzantine era, stands at the side of the nave. According to tradition, the church also holds relics of female saints venerated by the Orthodox.

Fener, the Greek quarter
Around the patriarchate, the wood and brick houses of Fener recall that the district was long that of the Greeks of Constantinople, the Phanariots, whose families supplied dragomans and princes to the Ottoman Empire. A short walk through the neighbouring streets completes the visit.
The closed gate
A detail the guides point out: the main gate of the patriarchate has been sealed since 1821, the year Patriarch Gregory V was hanged there, according to tradition. Visitors enter by a side gate, after a security check.

Modest dress is required (shoulders and knees covered); the church is an active place of worship, so be discreet during services and ask before taking photos. Access may be restricted or closed during services and feast days (especially around Orthodox holidays): check the patriarchate's official website before you come. Combine the visit with Balat and Fener, the Church of St Stephen of the Bulgars and the Pammakaristos (Fethiye) Mosque. For other places of worship, see the churches and synagogues of Istanbul.
