Basilica Cistern: the big classic
Built in the 6th century under Justinian, it lies under Sultanahmet, right opposite Hagia Sophia. Its 336 columns rising from the water, the two Medusa heads at the back and the Column of Tears make it the cistern everyone has seen in photos. After the 2022 restoration, the lighting and contemporary artworks add to the effect. The downside: it is also the most expensive, and the queue grows around midday. Go at 9am. It is sold online with fast-track entry: the fast-track ticket with audio guide starts at €32.90 in our latest October 2026 check; verify it for your date.
Cistern of Theodosius: the quiet one
A reservoir about 1,600 years old, attributed to Theodosius II (408-450), hidden under Piyer Loti Street and rediscovered in 2010. It is smaller, but its 32 marble columns and 45 brick vaults are easy to see from the glass walkway, and the 360-degree projection onto the columns and vaults makes for a different kind of visit. There are few people: it suits the end of the day, when Sultanahmet empties. Two online offers exist: a skip-the-line entry ticket for the Theodosius Cistern and a ticket for the Theodosius Cistern with the Basilica Cistern as an option. Price, duration and contents: check them on the listing; the ticket is also sold on site.
