Should you rent a car?

  • To visit Istanbul: no. The tram, metro, Marmaray and ferries serve almost every sight; see Istanbul's transport. Around Sultanahmet and in Beyoğlu, a car is a handicap.
  • For excursions: yes, it is useful for the Belgrade Forest, the Black Sea, Edirne or Iznik. See excursions from Istanbul. For a single day, an organised tour or a private transfer is often simpler.

Rental conditions

  • Age and experience: 21 minimum at most companies, often 25 for higher categories; a "young driver" surcharge is common.
  • Licence: valid national licence; some companies also ask for an international permit, which is essential if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet.
  • Payment: credit card, for the deposit, in the main driver's name.
  • Documents: passport, sometimes proof of the trip that brought you here. Keep the vehicle papers and insurance in the car.
  • Pick-up: at the airport or in town; see airports and the city centre.

Driving: the basics

Traffic drives on the right. General limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on roads and 120 km/h on motorways unless a sign says otherwise; speed cameras are numerous. The alcohol limit is low: never mix alcohol and driving. Traffic is very heavy at rush hour and on summer weekends on the Black Sea roads.

Tolls and HGS

Motorways, Bosphorus bridges and tunnels use electronic tolling, with no booths: there is no cash. A rental car generally carries an HGS sticker already linked to an account. Check this at pick-up and ask how crossings are billed (on return, or to your card). Go through the HGS lane at reduced speed. Crossings without a valid HGS lead to fines. A 2026 rate published by rental companies: the Osmangazi Bridge, on the road to Bursa, costs 995 TL for a car; amounts change every year.

Parking

Parking in town is paid and enforced. The municipal operator İSPARK runs car parks and street spaces, with rates revised every year. Do not leave the car on a pavement: towing is frequent. Informal "attendants" may ask for money to watch the car; prefer an official car park. Leave nothing visible in the vehicle.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Hidden fees: check toll, fuel, excess and late-return charges before signing.
  • Condition of the car: photograph every scratch at pick-up.
  • Navigation: GPS can send you into pedestrian or very narrow streets in the old city.
  • Take a taxi instead: to cross the city, see Istanbul's taxis.
