What you cook

A classic menu mixes several dishes: cold meze in olive oil, stuffed grape leaves (dolma), a meat or vegetable main, manti dumplings or börek depending on the workshop, then a dessert. In a local home you often cook in the host's kitchen; in a cooking school the stations are fully equipped and groups larger. State any dietary needs when you book: the menu can often be adapted, notably for meat-free cooking (see eating vegetarian in Istanbul).

Choosing your workshop

  • Duration: two to three hours fit an afternoon; workshops with a market visit last more than five hours.
  • Time: starts cluster around 10-11am (lunch) and 3-5pm (dinner).
  • Group size: classes in local homes are smaller; schools take more people.
  • Neighbourhood: several workshops are around Galata, Sultanahmet or Kadıköy; check the meeting point on the listing.
  • Alcohol: it is not always included; see alcohol in Istanbul.

Good to know

Book a few days ahead in high season; free cancellation, when offered, depends on the option. Wear practical clothes and report allergies. Tipping remains optional (see money, cards and tipping). For another craft workshop, see the ebru and calligraphy workshops; for sweets without cooking, the dondurma ice creams and the Spice Bazaar. All offers are also in the Istanbul: Turkish Cooking Class with a Professional Chef. A cooking class suits a rainy day (see what to do in Istanbul when it rains) or a stay as a couple.
