İSKİ's official position

According to İSKİ, water leaving the treatment plants and in the network is checked against the Turkish TS 266 standard for water intended for human consumption, chemically and bacteriologically, with regular analyses and published quality reports. İSKİ nonetheless points out that water can deteriorate inside buildings: corroded pipes and poorly maintained tanks, whose upkeep is the responsibility of the building's owners, not the utility.

In other words, the water is drinkable when it leaves the public network, but nobody can guarantee what comes out of the tap in your hotel or rental.

What residents do

Most Istanbulites do not drink tap water: they buy 19-litre demijohns delivered to the door, bottled water, or use a filter. The taste of the water and distrust of building tanks explain this habit.

Practical advice for a visitor

  • To drink, buy bottled water, sold everywhere in supermarkets, grocers and kiosks.
  • At the hotel, ask reception whether the tap water is filtered; otherwise drink bottled water.
  • If you have a delicate stomach, stick to bottled water for anything that goes in your mouth.
