The three formats

  • Traditional hammam: a heated room, a marble slab, a vigorous scrub with a kese glove, then soap foam. It is the most authentic experience. Hours are often separate for women and men; for example, at the Kılıç Ali Paşa hammam, women 08:00 to 16:00 and men 16:45 to 23:30 (official website hours). See the best hammams in Istanbul.
  • Private hammam and massage: a cabin reserved for two, with scrub, foam and oil massage. Ideal for a couple. The price shown in booking offers starts around 48 euros per person, massage extra. See the hammam in Istanbul: which offer.
  • Hotel spa: massages, pool, sauna and a rest room, without the communal scrub ritual. The big Bosphorus hotels have one, sometimes open to outside visitors: ask the hotel for the access policy and prices directly. See the Çırağan Palace.

What to choose

Tips

  • Ask what is included: scrub, foam, massage, drink, duration. The entrance price alone is not the price of the full ritual.
  • Avoid the middle of the day at tourist hammams, when the groups arrive.
  • Book ahead in high season, and check the cancellation policy.
  • Tip: allow a small amount for the attendants when leaving.
  • Health: avoid the hot hammam if you have a heart condition, are pregnant or feverish, and drink water.

To round off the evening, a Bosphorus dinner cruise is a good follow-up: see sunset cruise on the Bosphorus. For a honeymoon, see honeymoon in Istanbul.
