The sunset cruise: the short outing

If you want a short, cheap outing, take the "day or sunset" cruise with audio guide, about 2 hours. Pick the evening departure: it ends around dusk, when the palaces and bridges start to light up, but it is not a night cruise. It has no live guide: a recorded commentary goes with the trip. If you prefer a live guide and a smaller boat, look at the sunset yacht cruise. To be on the water once night has fallen, with the palaces, bridges and the Ortaköy mosque lit, you need a dinner cruise (see below). Our Bosphorus cruise comparison details departures and differences, and the sunset cruises compare the late-day offers.

Dinner cruise: the most booked, but not a guided tour

The dinner cruise with show is the best-selling activity in the city, with more than 75,000 reviews. It is not a tour: you dine in a group, watch a show of Turkish dances and admire the Bosphorus from the deck or your table. Prices, drinks and transfers are in our guide to the Bosphorus dinner cruise.

With a guide: evening food tour or private tour

  • Evening food tour with ferry to Kadıköy: 4 hours in a small group, dinner and tastings on the Asian side with a guide. It is the most expensive option in the table, and also the best rated. See also the food tour comparison.
  • Private night tour by car: 6 hours, private transfer, itinerary adjustable with the guide. Announced stops run from Sultanahmet to İstiklal and Taksim. The listing has only 7 reviews: it suits anyone who wants their own guide and a flexible schedule. As historic monuments are closed in the evening, much of the route is seen from outside.

What is open in the evening

  • Galata Tower: open daily until 10 pm, with an evening session from 6:30 pm (Galata Tower).
  • Basilica Cistern: an evening session exists, from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, with a separate ticket; hours are to be confirmed on site since the change of operator (Basilica Cistern).
  • Whirling dervish show: a 7 pm session every day at Hodjapasha, about one hour; see whirling dervishes in Istanbul.
  • İstiklal Avenue, Karaköy and Kadıköy: streets, bars and restaurants open late; see Istanbul nightlife.
  • Mosques and palaces: closed in the evening, but the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Ortaköy mosque can be seen lit from outside. Sultanahmet empties after closing time: keep the Sultanahmet district for late afternoon.

Which offer to choose

  • Minimum budget, one evening of views: the evening cruise with audio guide, around $8 (it ends around dusk).
  • A full evening without cooking: the dinner cruise with show.
  • A guide who explains: the evening food tour with ferry, or the yacht cruise with live guide.
  • A couple: the sunset yacht or the dinner cruise; see Istanbul for couples.
  • Your own pace: the private night tour.

Practical: getting back and finding your way

Plan the return before you book: taxi or app, see taxis in Istanbul and transport. Cruises often leave from Kabataş: check the departure point on your voucher. Dress warmly from October to March, as the wind on deck is sharp.
