Galata Tower: tickets, opening hours and views over the Golden Horn

Updated on October 1, 2026

Rising above the Galata district on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, the Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) was built in 1348 by the Genoese, who called it Christea Turris, the "Tower of Christ". A watchtower, then a prison and later a fire lookout under the Ottomans, it became a museum of the Turkish Ministry of Culture in 2020. Its circular balcony, 51.65 m above the ground, offers a 360-degree view over the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the old city. The tower is open every day from 8:30am to 10pm, the time of last entry (evening session from 6:30pm) and a ticket costs €30 (prices checked in October 2026). Allow 45 minutes to an hour inside, not counting the queue. The visit combines easily with a walk through the lanes of Galata down to Karaköy and the waterfront.

Highlights

The panoramic balcony

The panoramic balcony

The narrow gallery that circles the top looks out on one side over the Golden Horn and the historic peninsula, with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Süleymaniye, and on the other over the mouth of the Bosphorus and the Asian shore. Walk all the way round: each side shows a different face of the city.

Sunset

At the end of the day, the sun goes down behind the historic peninsula and its minarets: this is the most sought-after moment, and the longest queue. Seen from the Bosphorus or the Galata Bridge, the tower's silhouette then stands out above the rooftops.

The exhibition rooms

After the lift ride up, then the last levels by a narrow staircase, the way down leads through floors devoted to the tower's history: its Genoese foundation, its rebuilding after the earthquake of 1509 and the fires of 1794 and 1831, and its role as a fire lookout.

The legend of Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi

According to the Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi, this scholar leapt from the top of the tower with wings in the 17th century, during the reign of Murad IV, and glided all the way to Üsküdar on the Asian shore. Historians regard the story as a legend, which the tower brings to life.

Tips

A ticket costs €30 for foreign visitors (the ministry has announced €35 for 2027), payable at the ticket desk or online on the ministry's official museum ticketing site (muze.gov.tr); prices checked in October 2026. The Museum Pass Istanbul (€105, valid for 5 days from the first visit) includes the tower, provided you enter by 6:14pm at the latest: it does not cover evening visits. Buy your ticket online to skip the ticket-desk queue, although you will still queue for the lift, which gets long in the late afternoon and at weekends. The balcony is narrow and very exposed to the wind: in bad weather or at busy times, you share the view elbow to elbow.

From İstiklal Avenue, the Tünel funicular (F2) links Tünel Square to Karaköy; the tower is about 5 minutes' walk from the upper station.
