Art venues that are free for everyone
SALT Galata: free all week
The former headquarters of the Ottoman Bank, in Karaköy, is the only major cultural venue in the city where entry is free on every opening day, Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sunday from 11am to 6pm. You will find exhibitions, a research library and the Ottoman Bank Museum. Our SALT Galata page covers the visit. SALT Beyoğlu, on İstiklal Avenue, has the same hours and the same free entry.
Arter: free on Thursdays
On Thursdays the exhibitions at Arter, in Dolapdere, are free for everyone, and the museum closes at 8pm instead of 7pm. The rest of the week a ticket costs 450 TL, but entry is free for visitors aged 24 and under. Closed on Mondays.
The Pera Museum: free on Friday evenings
The Pera Museum is free for everyone on Fridays from 6pm to 10pm, and for students on Wednesdays. The full price is 450 TL. The slot is popular: arrive at 6pm to see "The Tortoise Trainer" before the crowd.
The Sakıp Sabancı Museum: free on Tuesdays
In the village of Emirgan, on the European shore of the Bosphorus, the Sakıp Sabancı Museum is free for everyone on Tuesdays, from 10am to 6pm. On other days a ticket costs 450 TL. Combine the visit with Emirgan Park, which is also free.
Free only for some visitors
- Istanbul Modern: the free Thursday entry (10am-2pm) and the Tuesday entry for 18-25-year-olds are reserved for residents of Turkey. Foreign visitors pay 1,000 TL (650 TL reduced). Free: under-12s, visitors with disabilities and holders of ICOM, CIMAM and MMKD cards. The ground-floor library is open to all without a ticket. See the Istanbul Modern page.
- Ministry of Culture museums (Topkapı, the archaeological museums, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts…): free for children aged 8 and under, people with disabilities, holders of an ICOM, ICOMOS or UNESCO card and journalists. There is no general free entry for foreign adults, and the May "museum week" only applies to Turkish citizens.
One case remains to check: free entry at the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, in Beşiktaş, could not be confirmed on an official website; do not take it for granted.
Free without being a museum
The imperial mosques, the exteriors of monuments and the old neighbourhoods cost nothing: see our list of twenty free things to do in Istanbul. The Ihlamur Palace and other national palaces have their own prices, listed on the website of the Directorate of National Palaces.
