Türkiye's first museum of modern and contemporary art, founded in 2004 in a former port warehouse, Istanbul Modern reopened on 4 May 2023 on the same site in Karaköy, in a new building by Renzo Piano, the architect's first project in Türkiye. Across 10,500 m², it shows art from Türkiye and beyond from 1945 to the present, a photography gallery, temporary exhibitions, a free open-access library and a cinema. Set on the quayside at the start of the Galataport promenade, its terraces offer one of the finest views of the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm, until 8pm on Fridays, and a ticket costs 1,000 TL for foreign visitors (prices checked in October 2026). Allow two hours for the collection and a temporary exhibition, longer if you have lunch on site or stop at the library. It is one of the best places in Istanbul on a rainy day.
Highlights

Renzo Piano's building
Built from 2016 to 2023 on the site of the former customs warehouse that used to house the museum, the building is clad in three-dimensionally shaped aluminium panels whose sheen shifts with the light and the Bosphorus. The fully glazed ground floor opens onto the waterfront promenade. In 2024 the building won first prize in the culture category of the World Architecture Festival.
The modern and contemporary art collection
On the second floor, the collection gallery traces art in Türkiye since 1945 alongside international artists, through regularly changing displays; it sits next to the main temporary exhibition gallery. The first floor houses the photography gallery, drawn from the museum's photography collection.
The rooftop terrace
At the top of the building, a viewing terrace hovers over a shallow pool that covers the whole roof and reflects the sky. The view sweeps 360 degrees over the Bosphorus, the Asian shore, the Golden Horn and the minarets of the old city.

The library and the cinema
On the ground floor, the library is open access and free of charge, with the same opening hours as the museum: 12,500 books and 8,000 periodicals on art, architecture, photography, museology and cinema. The museum also has a 156-seat cinema, with screenings at 350 TL.
