Public transport and taxi prices come from our airports guide (October 2026). Transfer prices are those of the GetYourGuide listings, varying with the date, currency and vehicle.
Real journey times to each district
The listings give about 45 to 60 minutes to Kadıköy, 70 to 90 to Beşiktaş, 80 to 100 to Taksim and Beyoğlu, and 60 to 90 to the old town: traffic, especially at the bridges, changes these figures. If you stay in Sultanahmet, the public route combines the M4, Marmaray (change at Ayrılık Çeşmesi) and the T1 tram: around an hour and a half according to third-party sites.
Public transport or private transfer?
The metro and coaches are cheaper, but the M4 stops on the Asian side and requires connections with suitcases. A private transfer costs more but is shared: with four people, $69 works out at $17 each. The price depends neither on the meter nor on jams, and the driver waits in the arrivals hall, with up to 75 minutes of free waiting after landing in some listings. For a tight budget or light luggage, the metro is enough.
Adore private transfer
The best rated by number of reviews: 4.7 from 234, from $69 per group of 4 at most. See the listing.
Private transfer to or from SAW
Rated 4.7 from 107 reviews, from £63 per group of 5. One traveller finds it a little expensive but cheaper than a taxi. See the listing.
VIP private transfer
Around $79 per group of up to 6, rated 4.5 from 136 reviews, a trip of about one hour. The same transfer is detailed in our IST and SAW comparison; it suits groups of five or six. See the listing.
If you would rather not look for a taxi on arrival (night flight, family, lots of luggage, first visit), Welcome Pickups offers a private transfer booked in advance: a fixed price agreed before you travel, an English-speaking driver who contacts you after landing with the meeting point, and flight tracking if you are delayed. Read the cancellation terms shown on their site before booking. If you travel light and are not in a hurry, public transport remains cheaper.
Pitfalls
- Check the airport: Istanbul has two, more than 80 km apart by road; the booking is tied to the code you choose.
- Price per person or per vehicle: listings mix both.
- The taxi: only from the official rank, meter running, tolls extra; see taxis in Istanbul and scams and safety.
- The return: some operators ask for pick-up about four hours before the flight.
- The shore: to sleep near the airport on the Asian side, see European or Asian side.
Which option to choose?
- Tight budget, little luggage, Kadıköy: the M4 metro.
- Taksim without connections: the Havabus coach.
- Family, suitcases, late flight: the Adore transfer or the 5-seat transfer.
- Group of five or six: the VIP transfer.
Frequently asked questions
How long from SAW to Sultanahmet? 60 to 90 minutes by car, around 1 h 30 by public transport (October 2026).
Is there a direct metro to the old town? No: M4, then Marmaray or ferry.
How much is a private transfer? From about $63 to $79 per vehicle depending on the listing.
Is a taxi better? A taxi has no fixed price and depends on traffic; a private transfer is more predictable.
