Bebek is a residential village on the European shore of the Bosphorus, in the Beşiktaş district, between Arnavutköy to the south and the Rumeli Hisarı fortress to the north. Around a small bay it offers a pedestrian waterfront, busy cafés and pastry shops, yalı (waterside mansions) and a park open to the strait. Istanbul residents come for weekend brunch, for the walk to Rumeli Hisarı and for the view of ships passing close to the quay. Access is free all year; allow two to three hours, or half a day if you add Arnavutköy or the fortress.
Highlights

The bay and the waterfront
Bebek's bay forms a small crescent where rowing boats and launches are moored. The wide, open quay serves as a promenade: benches facing the water, anglers, joggers and families mix from morning to night. This is the heart of the village and the starting point for every walk.

The walk to Rumeli Hisarı
To the north, the seafront path reaches the walls of the Rumeli Hisarı fortress in about twenty minutes on foot; it is closed to visitors but looks fine from outside. To the south, the same promenade leads to Arnavutköy.
Bebek Park
A gently sloping park runs down to the strait, with lawns, trees and benches facing the passing cargo ships and ferries. It is where locals settle with a tea or a picnic when the weather allows.
The cafés and pastry
Bebek is known for its waterfront terraces, tea rooms and pastries, including the almond-paste sweets that made the village's name. For weekend breakfasts and brunches, see our guide to Turkish breakfast in Istanbul.
The Bosphorus mansions
Wooden and stone yalı line the coastal road, among them the former residence of the viceroy of Egypt, now the Egyptian consulate, in Art Nouveau style. They can only be seen from outside.

Tips
At weekends the terraces are full at brunch time: arrive before 10 a.m. or book. Prices at the quayside cafés are higher than elsewhere in the city; check the menu before sitting down. For a fish meal, continue on foot to Arnavutköy, or see our guide to the villages of the Bosphorus European shore.
How to get there
Bebek, Beşiktaş, Istanbul (European shore of the Bosphorus). From Kabataş, the terminus of the T1 tram, bus 25E follows the Bosphorus via Ortaköy to Bebek and continues towards Rumeli Hisarı. Buses and dolmuş from Beşiktaş also serve the village. By taxi from Taksim, allow about twenty minutes outside rush hour; traffic on the coastal road is heavy in the late afternoon and at weekends.
