Pottery: what you actually do

In a pottery session, a potter first explains the movements, then you shape a simple piece, a bowl or cup, by hand or on the wheel. Groups are small, often nine people at most. One workshop in the old city, near Cağaloğlu, advertises clay, hand glazing and two firings, with tea, coffee and water included. A piece is not ready the same day: it has to dry and be fired. Ask whether the workshop keeps it for you to collect later or ships it, because you would need to stay a few days in Istanbul to take it home.

  • The result: a one-of-a-kind piece, often slightly uneven, glazed and fired after you leave. Plan sturdy packing for your suitcase.
  • What to wear: clay stains. An apron is usually provided, but wear clothes you do not mind.
  • For children: ask about the minimum age. See also Istanbul with kids.

Iznik tiles

Iznik tiles, decorated with tulips, carnations and cobalt blue and tomato red patterns, adorned the palaces and mosques of the Ottoman capital. They take their name from the town of Iznik, east of Istanbul and the subject of a day trip, see the Iznik excursion. Painting workshops let you decorate a tile or plate by hand with pigments under an artist's guidance, with drinks and a snack depending on the offer. To see fine pieces before you try, stop by the Pera Museum, which has a collection of Kütahya ceramics, and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts.

Where and how to book

Workshops are mostly in the old city (Cağaloğlu, Sultanahmet), in Beyoğlu and in Kadıköy, on the Asian side.

  • Online: the Istanbul: Turkish Tile Painting & Ceramic Workshop with Snacks gathers pottery and tile painting workshops; compare the duration, the instructor's language, free cancellation and what is included. This page contains partner links: if you book, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
  • Directly: several workshops accept bookings by message or through their website. Ask for the final price and whether firing and shipping are included.
  • Lead time: groups are small; in high season (spring and autumn), book at least a few days ahead.
  • To avoid: "free workshops" offered at the entrance to a bazaar, which mainly aim to sell. See scams and safety in Istanbul.

Which time to choose

A workshop fits easily into half a day, especially on a rainy day, or on a Monday when many museums are closed: see museums open on Monday. For the season, see the best time to visit Istanbul.
