Do you need a car in Cappadocia?
Cappadocia is a wide region: the villages (Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos) are close together, but the main sights are 20 to 100 kilometres apart. A car lets you leave when you like, at dawn or sunset, and stop in villages. It matters less if you stay two days in Göreme: local minibuses (dolmuş) and group tours already serve the main sights. To compare transport options before your trip, see Cappadocia from Istanbul.
| Situation | Car? |
|---|---|
| 2 days in Göreme, valleys and open-air museum | Not necessary |
| 3 days or more, distant sights (Ihlara, Soğanlı) | Yes, very handy |
| Sunrise at a viewpoint | Yes, or a booked taxi |
| You are not comfortable driving at night | No, take a tour |
Which airport to pick the car up at?
- Kayseri Erkilet (ASR): more flights from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines from IST, Pegasus and AJet from SAW) and usually a wider choice of rental companies. Allow about 1 h 15 by road to Göreme, on a road that bypasses Kayseri.
- Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV): the closest, about 40 to 50 minutes from Göreme, but fewer flights (Turkish Airlines from IST, AJet from SAW) and fewer counters. Check that a counter is open at your arrival time.
Book the car ahead, especially in spring and autumn, and give your flight number: counters at small airports close early. Distances are approximate; confirm them with your navigation app.
Driving in Cappadocia
Traffic drives on the right. Main roads are in good condition and quiet, far calmer than Istanbul. Villages have narrow, cobbled, sloping streets: park at the edge rather than in the centre. In winter, frost and snow are possible on the Anatolian plateau: ask for suitable tyres. Avoid driving at night away from main roads: little lighting, and animals or tractors on the road.
At dawn, the roads around Göreme fill with vehicles following the balloons: drive slowly and never stop on the carriageway. For general rental conditions (age, licence, deposit), read driving and renting a car in Istanbul: they are the same across the country.
Which sights by car?
- Around Göreme: the open-air museum, the Red, Rose and Love valleys, Paşabağ, Zelve, Uçhisar. Everything is close and can also be done on foot or by dolmuş.
- Underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu: south of Nevşehir, about half an hour by road. The tunnels are low and narrow; arrive early, before the coaches. Check opening hours and prices with the site, as they change.
- Ihlara Valley and Selime: over an hour's drive from Göreme; allow half a day.
- Soğanlı: a quiet valley away from the crowds, hard to reach without a car.
Parking is generally easy and often free or cheap near the sights; keep some change for attended car parks.
Fuel and tolls
Petrol stations are frequent on the main roads and around Nevşehir and Kayseri; fill up before an excursion to Ihlara or Soğanlı. Fuel prices change often in Turkey: check at the pump rather than trusting an old figure. Ask the company how any electronic toll passes (HGS) are billed, as explained in our article on renting in Istanbul.
How much does it cost?
Prices depend on the season, the length, the category and the insurance excess: compare several offers with the same number of days and the same insurance. A small car is enough on paved roads; an SUV is only useful in winter or on dirt tracks. Add the deposit (blocked on a credit card in the driver's name), fuel and any one-way fee if you drop the car at another airport.
Tips before you go
- Photograph every scratch at pick-up and return.
- Check the insurance, the excess and the cover for tyres and windows.
- Download the map offline: the network is patchy in the valleys.
- Never drink and drive: the limit is very low. See scams and safety in Istanbul for general habits.
If you have an accident
On the spot: get to safety, switch on the hazard lights, check for injuries and call emergency services (112 (emergencies)). Get a written police report on the spot: without it, the rental company and the insurer may refuse to pay. Photograph the vehicles, the plate, the road and the damage, note the other driver's details, and call the rental company before any repair.
Who pays what: damage to the car is covered by the rental company's protection (CDW), subject to its excess (deductible), or by an excess cover bought with the rental; injuries and medical costs fall under your travel insurance. Travel insurance does not pay for the rental car or for damage to third parties.
SafetyWing covers medical costs after an accident abroad; check the policy's conditions for driving (a licence valid in the country, a helmet on a scooter).
