What to see in Cappadocia

The Göreme Open Air Museum
This is the best-known site, a UNESCO World Heritage listing: a group of rock-cut monasteries and chapels with Byzantine frescoes, a few minutes from the village. Allow an hour and a half. Entry is €20, and the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), the best preserved, costs an extra €6. Arrive at opening time, before the tour groups.
The valleys
The Red and Rose valleys are best walked at sunset, when the tuff takes on its warmest colours. Love Valley (Aşk Vadisi) is known for fairy chimneys with very suggestive shapes, and Pigeon Valley for the dovecotes cut into the cliff between Göreme and Uçhisar. Paşabağ and Zelve, further east, have chimneys with several caps.
Uçhisar and Avanos
Uçhisar Castle, a huge rock outcrop riddled with dwellings, gives the widest view of the region. Avanos, on the Kızılırmak river, is a pottery town where you can visit workshops and try the wheel.
Red tour or Green tour
Agencies in Göreme sell the region as two day tours by minibus with a guide. Without a car, this is the simplest way to reach the distant sites.
| Red tour (north) | Green tour (south) | |
|---|---|---|
| Sights | Göreme Open Air Museum, Paşabağ, Love Valley, Uçhisar Castle, Avanos depending on the agency | underground cities, Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery, Pigeon Valley |
| Duration | about 7 hours | about 9 hours |
| Walking | little, relaxed pace | an easy hike in the Ihlara canyon |
| Best for | a first day, people short of time | those who want the underground cities and nature |
Itineraries vary from one agency to the next: ask for the exact route, what is included (tickets, lunch) and the group size. With only one day, the Red tour covers the best photos; with two days, do both. A combined Red and Green tour in a single day also exists, but leaves little time at each site.
The underground cities
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are two cities dug over several levels below ground, with communal rooms, stables, kitchens and ventilation shafts, where residents took refuge during invasions. Only some of the levels can be visited. The tunnels are narrow and low, with sections where you must stoop: avoid them if you are claustrophobic or have trouble walking. The 2026 entrance fee could not be confirmed: it is included in most tours, otherwise ask at the ticket office.
The hot air balloon flight

The balloon flight is the highlight of the stay: take-off before dawn, about an hour in the air, then back at your hotel mid-morning. The wind decides: the authorities cancel flights when conditions are unsafe, and cancellations are more frequent in winter. Book the flight for your first morning so you can postpone it. Choosing a company, prices and cancellation terms are covered in our guide hot air balloon in Cappadocia: which offer to choose.
How many days to allow
- One day: possible as an excursion from Istanbul, but without the balloon, which takes off at dawn.
- Two nights: the reasonable minimum, with one day for the north (Red tour) and one for the south (Green tour).
- Three nights: the right pace, with time to walk in the valleys and to postpone the balloon if it is windy.
If you want to combine Istanbul and Cappadocia, see our Istanbul and Cappadocia 7-day itinerary.
Where to stay: cave hotels
The typical accommodation is a hotel carved into the rock, with vaulted rooms and a terrace over the fairy chimneys.
- Göreme: the most practical village, with restaurants, agencies and tour departures within walking distance; many cave hotels at varied budgets.
- Uçhisar: quieter and perched high, with the most spectacular terraces, at the price of a slope to climb to the centre.
- Ürgüp and Avanos: more authentic and often cheaper, but further from the sights.
Book early for terraces overlooking the balloons, which are in high demand in spring and autumn. A cave hotel can be cold in winter: check the heating.
Getting there from Istanbul
There is no direct train. Flying (about 1 h 15 to Kayseri or Nevşehir, then a transfer of roughly an hour) is the fastest option; the overnight bus takes about ten hours. All the details, schedules and prices are in our guide Cappadocia from Istanbul; to compare flights, see Cappadocia from Istanbul by plane: which offer. Once there, a rental car gives you the freedom to explore the valleys on your own, see car rental in Cappadocia.
When to go
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are the best seasons: mild temperatures for walking and the most regular balloon flights. Summer is hot by day, but mornings stay cool. Winter is cold and often snowy, spectacular but with more balloon cancellations.
