The most affordable areas
| Area | Why it is cheaper | Transport to the old city |
|---|---|---|
| Sirkeci | Many mid-range and budget hotels | T1 tram, on foot |
| Beyoğlu, away from İstiklal | Very wide choice, hostels, strong competition | M2 metro, F1 funicular, T1 tram |
| Beşiktaş | Working-class and student area, modest addresses | Ferry, bus, T1 tram from Kabataş |
| Kadıköy | Asian side, restaurants at moderate prices | Ferry to Eminönü or Karaköy |
As a rule, the cheapest addresses are those that require a journey or a climb. Conversely, Sultanahmet, Karaköy and Nişantaşı concentrate the highest prices at equal standard, according to our guide where to stay in Istanbul.
Sirkeci: the most practical for saving
Between Sultanahmet and the Golden Horn, Sirkeci has many budget hotels around the old Sirkeci station. The T1 tram, the Marmaray train and the Eminönü ferries are a few minutes away: it is the best-connected district of the old city. The Spice Bazaar is next door. The trade-off: the area is noisy by day and deserted in the evening. See the guide to Eminönü and Sirkeci.
Kadıköy: moderate prices and the ferry

On the Asian side, you often sleep and eat for less than on the European side. The Tuesday market and the district's local restaurants let you eat cheaply. The ferry crossing to Eminönü or Karaköy takes about twenty minutes and is part of the pleasure. Service stops late in the evening: check the time of the last departure, and know the Marmaray alternative. See the guide to Kadıköy.
Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş: simple addresses
Around Taksim, away from the İstiklal streets, you find the widest choice of hostels and small hotels. Beşiktaş offers more modest addresses and a residents' district. In both cases, look at the distance to the nearest station and the noise: see our guide to the Beyoğlu and Taksim district and the Beşiktaş district.
Calculating the real cost: room plus transport
A cheaper room in Kadıköy or Beşiktaş adds journeys. With the anonymous Istanbulkart, a full-fare journey costs 46.20 TL, and the ferry crossing between Eminönü or Karaköy and Kadıköy 65.21 TL, since the increase of 20 July 2026. Two crossings a day for five days make 10 crossings, or 652.10 TL. Compare that amount with the price gap between two hotels on identical dates before choosing: the fare details are in our guide to the travel budget in Istanbul.

Breakfast and meals
A hotel with breakfast included saves a meal. For the rest, local restaurants and street stalls let you eat cheaply: see our guide to the travel budget in Istanbul and the one on Turkish breakfast.
Types of budget accommodation
- Hostel: dormitory bed, shared kitchen. Read recent reviews on noise and the state of the bathrooms.
- Guesthouse or small family hotel: simple room, breakfast often included, a good option in Sirkeci and the old city.
- Room in a home or apartment: only if the property has the Ministry of Culture and Tourism permit and the official plaque at the entrance. See where to stay in Istanbul.
The accommodation tax and hidden fees
The accommodation tax, or konaklama vergisi, is a percentage of the room price excluding VAT: 1% from 1 May to 31 December 2026, 2% from 1 January 2027 unless a new decision is made (details in where to stay in Istanbul). It appears on a separate line of the bill. Before paying, check what the displayed price includes: tax, breakfast, free cancellation.
Warning signs
- A listing with no visible permit number or a host who asks you to pay outside the platform.
- A price far below the market in a central area.
- A taxi driver who claims your hotel is closed: see scams and safety in Istanbul.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism runs a search service for establishments holding a tourism operation certificate, by name, type and city.
