April weather: the real start of spring

1950-2025 average April in Istanbul
Average maximum temperature 17.4 °C
Average minimum temperature 9.2 °C
Rainfall 48 mm
Rainy days 10
Sea temperature 11.3 °C

Source: averages published for Istanbul by the General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM), the Turkish weather service; Sea of Marmara temperature over 1970-2025. Sunny afternoons are pleasant for walking, but mornings and evenings by the water stay cool and a shower is possible one day in three. The sea is still too cold for swimming. Flowering depends on the spring: a cold winter delays it, a warm month brings it forward.

Crowds and prices in April

April is a high-demand month: tulips, the film festival, Easter holidays in many countries and the 23 April holiday all add up. Queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace lengthen, and hotels in Sultanahmet, Karaköy and Beyoğlu cost more than in March. Book early, visit museums at opening time and keep the flower parks for a weekday morning. See avoiding queues and where to stay in Istanbul.

Events in April

The tulip festival: all April

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) organises the tulip festival every April, called "Lale Bayramı" since 2024. The 2026 edition ran from 1 to 30 April, at five sites: Emirgan Park, Gülhane Park, Sultanahmet Square, Göztepe 60. Yıl Park and the Khedive's Grove. Entry is free. The 2027 programme has not yet been announced; the festival follows the same calendar every year, across the whole month. See our page on the Istanbul tulip festival. Peak bloom is generally between 10 and 20 April.

The Istanbul Film Festival

Organised every April by the İKSV foundation, it held its 45th edition from 9 to 19 April 2026, in cinemas across the city. Screenings are ticketed and the programme is published in spring. The dates of the 46th edition had not been announced on the İKSV's official site in October 2026; count on the second or third week of April. See the festivals agenda.

The half marathon

The Türkiye İş Bankası half marathon was run on Sunday 19 April 2026, with compulsory registration. The 2027 date is not confirmed by the organisers; if it falls on an April Sunday, streets in the historic peninsula will be closed during the morning.

Friday 23 April: National Sovereignty and Children's Day

A national public holiday: parades, shows and children's activities, government offices closed. In 2027 it falls on a Friday and creates a three-day weekend, so parks, ferries and roads will be very busy.

25 April: Anzac Day ceremony at Gallipoli

On 25 April, ceremonies take place on the Gelibolu peninsula for the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand corps. It is an excursion of several hours from Istanbul: see Troy and Gallipoli from Istanbul, and find out early about access conditions, which are strictly controlled.

What to wear in April

  • Layers: a jacket for morning and evening, a T-shirt in the afternoon.
  • A light waterproof or a pocket umbrella.
  • Closed walking shoes: the flower parks have slopes and cobblestones are slippery in the rain.
  • Sunglasses.
  • A scarf for mosques; see what to wear in mosques.
