The day tour

This is what most visitors choose. An air-conditioned minibus or coach picks you up in central Istanbul, usually between 7:45 and 9:00, with an English-speaking guide. The day links Lake Sapanca, the village of Maşukiye and its waterfalls, a restaurant lunch (one drink included) and free time. Activities are paid on the spot and cost extra: the Kartepe cable car, zipline, quad bikes, a giant swing. Allow 10 to 12 hours in total.

  • There are several GetYourGuide offers: the Sapanca and Maşukiye tour with lunch and a variant with hotel pickup. Check the price, the rating and what the listing includes: prices and inclusions differ from one operator to another. This page contains partner links: if you book, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
  • Beware of tours that pile up shop stops: some sell a "shopping day". Our guide to scams and safety in Istanbul lists useful reflexes.

Going on your own

  • By bus: coaches leave Istanbul (Esenler bus station on the European side, and Harem on the Asian side) for Sapanca. Fares seen range from about 800 to 1,100 TL, for a journey of 2.5 to over 3 hours depending on traffic. Timetables and departure stations change: check them on a ticket comparison site on the day.
  • By train: fast trains link Istanbul (Halkalı, Söğütlüçeşme, Bostancı, Gebze) to Arifiye station, the closest to Sapanca, for about 150 to 260 TL. You then need a taxi or minibus to reach the lake.
  • On site: dolmuş (shared minibuses) serve the area, but Maşukiye and Kartepe are easier by taxi or car. To reach the bus or railway station in Istanbul, see our transport in Istanbul.
  • By car: renting is possible, see driving and renting a car in Istanbul. Leaving the city is slow at weekends. You can compare car rental offers before you leave.

What to see and do

  • Lake Sapanca: a freshwater lake ringed by wooded hills, with a walking path that goes all the way round and restaurants and jetties on the shore. It is usually the first stop.
  • Maşukiye: a village known all year for its waterfalls laid out around restaurant terraces and cabins, and for its food, notably grilled fish.
  • Kartepe: a mountain used as a ski resort in winter and for hiking, quad biking or walks in summer. The Kartepe cable car links Derbent (331 m) to Kuzuyayla (1,421 m) over about 4.7 km; it is reported to run daily from 10:00 to 19:00. We found no reliable 2026 fare: ask the operator or your tour.

When to go

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for walking by the lake. In summer the area is cool compared with Istanbul but very busy at weekends. In winter Kartepe can be snowy: roads and the cable car depend on the weather. Bring a jacket even in summer if you go up in altitude.
