Colourful facades and a cobbled lane in the Balat district

Which offer to choose?

The most photographed places

  • Sultanahmet: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome are a few minutes' walk from each other. Short sessions concentrate there, and the area is very busy during the day.
  • Balat: the colourful facades and cobbled lanes of Balat and Fener are one of photographers' favourite backdrops; the district is quieter early in the morning.
  • Galata: the Galata Bridge and the Galata Tower give photos with the city skyline behind you. For other viewpoints, see our sunset viewpoints.
  • Ortaköy: the Ortaköy Mosque and the Bosphorus Bridge, preferably in the late afternoon.

How much does it cost, and what does the price include?

Of the offers seen, only the rooftop session showed a readable price: from $440 per person for 20 retouched photos delivered within 72 hours. For the other three the price could not be read: check it for your date. As a benchmark, a similar offer on the Musement platform (GetYourGuide group) advertised about £292 for one hour and 35 retouched photos delivered within four business days, with a password-protected online gallery. Independent photographers on other platforms come in lower, for example about 3,500 TL for 30 minutes and 5 photos, or 6,500 TL for one hour and 10 photos, according to undated search results: compare the number of photos, the duration and the delivery time, not only the price.

Preparing for the shoot

  • Clothing: to enter a mosque, follow the rules on dress in mosques; sessions are usually held outside the monuments, but check with the photographer.
  • Light: early in the morning or late in the afternoon the light is softer and the sites are less crowded. At midday in summer, shadows are harsh.
  • Shoes: the cobbled lanes of Balat are uneven and often sloping.
  • Time: tell the photographer your priorities (a backdrop, a moment, an outfit) at the start, so you do not lose time between locations.
  • Delivery: ask for the delivery time, the format (online gallery or files) and how long the photos are kept before you book.
  • Cancellation: in case of rain, read the listing's rescheduling policy.

Without a photographer: the free option

A compact tripod, your phone's timer and a sunrise in Balat or on the Galata Bridge already give lovely photos, with no booking. For more ideas of places that cost nothing, see our free things to do in Istanbul.
