The guided old-city tour
The three-hour ride remains the easiest to book. The guide takes a small group around the historic peninsula: the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the surroundings of Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, the backstreets behind the mosques, sometimes the waterfront. You stop for explanations and photos but do not go inside the monuments: it is not a museum visit. Pair it with another day for the monuments, see the Sultanahmet district.
- Pace: slow, with many stops; children comfortable on an adult bike enjoy it, but ask about the minimum age.
- Equipment: helmet, lock and water are generally provided or recommended; ask before booking.
- Time of day: in the morning traffic is calmer and the light softer.
Bike and boat: from Europe to Asia
The "Eurasia" tour combines a ride on the European side, the Bosphorus crossing on a public ferry, then a second ride on the Asian side: about 20 km in all on mostly flat ground, for a half-day of about 5 hours. It is the most complete option, but you need to be used to cycling. To understand the ferry crossings, see the most beautiful ferry rides in Istanbul. On the Asian side, Moda and its seafront make a pleasant stop.
Why an electric bike changes everything
The hills of Beyoğlu, Galata, Fener and Balat are steep, and electric assistance turns a gruelling ride into a simple outing. A guide also uses cobbled streets and hilly areas such as Balat and Fener, hard to do on a regular bike. Along the Bosphorus, Bebek has a flat waterfront, popular with cyclists at weekends.
Renting a bike without a guide
Rental is available in shops or online, by the hour or day, regular or electric. Tips:
- Routes: favour the waterfronts (Bosphorus, Moda, the Golden Horn shore) over central Beyoğlu or the Galata Bridge, which are very crowded.
- Safety: driving is fast and pedestrians cross everywhere; ride outside rush hour and avoid the big avenues. See also scams and safety in Istanbul.
- Rain: wet cobbles are slippery; postpone if the sky is low.
The Princes' Islands by bike
The Princes' Islands have few or no cars, which makes them the best cycling ground in the region. Several operators offer a guided e-bike ride of about 5 hours on Büyükada, with its wooden villas, pine forests and viewpoints. To compare these offers with other ways of visiting, read the Princes' Islands from Istanbul: which offer and the page on the Princes' Islands. Avoid horse-drawn carriage rides: they hurt the animals, and cycling is a better option.
Where and how to book

- When: in spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild, see the best time to visit Istanbul. In summer, start early; in winter, rain and wind get in the way.
- What to wear: closed shoes, a light windproof layer, sunglasses, no long skirt that catches the chain.
