Galatasaray Hammam: Beyoğlu's 1481 Turkish bath, prices and opening hours
The Tarihi Galatasaray Hamamı (historic Galatasaray hammam) stands in Beyoğlu on Turnacıbaşı Street, which links İstiklal Avenue to Cihangir, right behind the back gate of Galatasaray High School. It was built in 1481 under Sultan Bayezid II (Beyazıt II) as part of a large Ottoman complex at Galatasaray, and it still welcomes bathers today. It is a good address if you stay or go out around İstiklal and Taksim and do not want to cross the Golden Horn to Sultanahmet. The hammam offers three options: the bath alone, the bath with scrub and foam, and the "Pasha service" with a 40-minute oil massage.
Highlights

A 1481 bath steps from İstiklal
Built by Bayezid II in the late 15th century, the hammam is still open to the public every day, a few minutes' walk from Galatasaray Square.
The 1965 restoration
According to Time Out, the 1965 restoration rebuilt the plate-glass section in concrete, added a marble fountain in the middle of the hall and covered the walls with glazed, painted tiles. Today's bath owes as much to that 20th-century campaign as to the original building.
The three options
The official website lists the hammam alone, the "scrub service" (hammam, kese scrub and foam bath) and the "Pasha service" (hammam, scrub, foam and a 40-minute oil massage). Time Out gives 2,000 ₺ for the scrub with foam bath; the official site publishes no price list, so ask for the day's rate before booking.
A neighbourhood hammam, not a postcard set
Unlike the great baths of Sultanahmet, the Galatasaray is wedged between Beyoğlu apartment buildings and is visited first of all to wash and relax. To compare with the Old City baths, see the Cağaloğlu hammam or our guide to the best hammams in Istanbul.
Practical info
Tips
- Book ahead: the official website has a booking button, a phone number (+90 212 252 42 42) and an e-mail address (booking@galatasarayhamami.com). The site does not detail how the men's and women's sections work, how long each option lasts or the age rules: ask when you book, especially as a couple or with a teenager. The hammam is not advised for pregnant women or people with heart conditions, nor after a heavy meal or alcohol. Tipping the attendant is customary but optional, in cash (see money, cards and tipping). Refuse any extra treatment offered on the spot without a stated price. To compare options with a private massage, see hammam in Istanbul: which offer to book; a traditional Turkish bath experience or Istanbul: Private Turkish Bath, Massage and Spa in Old City can also be booked online (no offer specific to Galatasaray). See also: Cihangir and Çukurcuma (information checked in October 2026).
How to get there
