Relative levels, without prices: check rates for your dates.
Göreme: the most practical
The village concentrates restaurants, agencies and tour departures, and the open-air museum is a few minutes away. Many of its hotels are carved into the rock, at very varied budgets. Downside: it is the busiest, and some streets are lively in the evening.
Uçhisar: the view
Dominated by its castle, Uçhisar is calmer and perched high: its terraces are among the most spectacular. You have to climb a slope to reach the centre, which matters with luggage or walking difficulties. The village has fewer restaurants than Göreme.
Ürgüp: the authentic alternative
A larger town a few kilometres from Göreme, Ürgüp has good restaurants and charming hotels that are often cheaper. You are a little farther from the sights: plan on a car or a transfer, see renting a car in Cappadocia.
Watching the balloons from your hotel

Flights take off before dawn, when the wind allows. A terrace facing the valleys lets you see them without leaving the hotel, but nothing is guaranteed: the wind decides the flights, and cancellations are more frequent in winter. Ask the hotel which way the terrace faces and read recent reviews. To book the flight itself, see balloon flight in Cappadocia: which offer to choose.
How to choose your room
- Cave or not: "cave hotels" range from real rooms carved in the rock to vaulted stone rooms; look at the photos and reviews.
- Stairs: many hotels are on a hillside, without a lift.
- Heating: essential in winter, as cave rooms can be cold.
- Damp and light: some rooms have few windows; ask.
- Transfer: ask whether the hotel picks up at Kayseri or Nevşehir airports.
When to book
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are the busiest seasons: book rooms with a terrace several weeks ahead, longer for weekends and public holidays. Plan at least two nights, three to get a second chance at the balloon. Choose a cancellable rate.
