June weather: hot, bright and dry

Swimming along the Bosphorus in summer

Istanbul averages June
Average maximum temperature 27.1 °C
Average minimum temperature 18.0 °C
Rainfall 28 mm, 5 rainy days
Sea temperature (Marmara) 20.2 °C
Sunrise and sunset (21 June) about 5:30 and 20:40

Sources: 1950-2025 averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) for temperatures, rainfall and the sea; sunrise and sunset times are an astronomical calculation for Istanbul (UTC+3, no clock change). An average hides variations: during a heat wave, daytime highs climb well above 27 °C, especially in the narrow streets of the old city. Evenings stay mild and night falls late, which leaves plenty of time for a walk by the water after sightseeing. At 20 °C the sea is cool but fine for swimmers who don't mind it.

Crowds and prices in June

June is high season: queues grow at Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern, and hotels in Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu fill up. The Turkish school calendar weighs on the month: according to the Ministry of National Education calendar reported in the press, the 2026-2027 school year ends on Friday 25 June 2027. Turkish families then start their holidays, which loads roads and beaches the following weekend. Book your accommodation early if your dates fall around the music festival; our guide on where to stay in Istanbul compares the neighbourhoods. June events

The Istanbul Music Festival

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the Istanbul Music Festival is devoted to classical music. Its 54th edition took place from 11 to 25 June 2026, with 22 concerts in 14 venues: the Grand Bazaar, Yıldız Park, Armenian and Anglican churches in Beyoğlu, the Atatürk Cultural Centre, Salon İKSV and Arter, among others. Concerts are ticketed. The dates of the 55th edition, in 2027, have not been announced: the festival is traditionally held in June, and the programme is published on the İKSV website before ticket sales open. See also our festival calendar.

Late June: the jazz festival

The Istanbul Jazz Festival opened its 33rd edition on 30 June 2026. The festival generally follows the same calendar each summer, but the dates of the 2027 edition have not been announced. Book your tickets as soon as sales open.

No public holiday in June

No national holiday or bayram falls in June 2027: Kurban Bayramı runs from 16 to 19 May 2027, and the next national holiday is 15 July. Museums and bazaars therefore keep their usual hours, apart from weekly closing days: Monday for Dolmabahçe Palace, Tuesday for Topkapı Palace. See public holidays and bayrams.

What to wear in June

  • Light, breathable clothes, in cotton or linen, preferably long for religious sites.
  • A scarf or shawl for mosques: shoulders and knees must be covered, see what to wear in mosques.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, since the squares of Sultanahmet offer little shade.
  • Comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, and sandals that are easy to take off.
  • A swimsuit and a towel, if you are heading for the beach or the islands.
  • A light jacket for evenings on the ferry or the Bosphorus, where the wind cools things down.

The best things to do in June

The pier at Büyükada, on the Princes' Islands

  • The Princes' Islands: the Princes' Islands are ideal on weekdays, before the summer weekend crowds. Ferries take 1 h 45 from Kabataş.
  • A Bosphorus cruise: the Bosphorus cruise makes the most of the long evenings; Şehir Hatları winter timetables stay in force until 27 June 2027, with summer timetables afterwards.
  • Early-morning visits: Hagia Sophia opens at 8:00 from April to September, see the page on Hagia Sophia.
  • Sunset around 20:40: our Istanbul viewpoints list terraces and quays.
  • Shaded parks: Gülhane Park and Yıldız Park for the hot hours.
  • The hammam: an option for the end of the day; see the best hammams.

Beaches and day trips in June

Şile Castle on its islet, seen from the heights

Lifeguards are on duty in supervised areas from mid-June to mid-September: before that date, do not swim outside supervised areas. Kilyos and Şile and Ağva on the Black Sea are the easiest beach outings; currents are strong there, so stay between the flags. The Istanbul beaches guide compares the options. For a cooler day, the Belgrade Forest offers shade. Day trips from Istanbul to Bursa or Edirne are best kept for early morning.
