How to organise a summer day

- Midday (12:00 to 16:00): museums, the Basilica Cistern, a hammam, lunch in the shade.
- Late afternoon: a ferry on the Bosphorus, where the breeze cools you down; see the most beautiful ferry rides.
- Evening: sunset around 20:30, then dinner on a terrace. The Galata Tower is open until 22:00, and nightlife is in full swing.
Crowds and prices in summer

July is, with October, the most visited month: according to the provincial directorate of culture and tourism, Istanbul received nearly 1.9 million foreign visitors in July 2025. Queues grow at Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the cistern, and hotels show their highest rates; see avoiding queues, where to stay in Istanbul and the travel budget. According to the Ministry of National Education calendar reported in the press, the 2026-2027 school year ends on 25 June 2027, which starts Turkish families' holidays.

Beaches, islands and swimming

Lifeguards are on duty in supervised areas from mid-June to mid-September. The most accessible are Kilyos, Şile and Ağva on the Black Sea and the beach clubs of the Princes' Islands; roads are saturated at weekends, so leave early or go on a weekday. Black Sea currents are strong: stay between the flags. All the details are in the Istanbul beaches.
