July weather: the peak of the heat

Istanbul averages July
Average maximum temperature 29.7 °C
Average minimum temperature 20.5 °C
Rainfall 22 mm, 3 rainy days
Sea temperature (Marmara) 23.4 °C
Sunrise and sunset (15 July) about 5:45 and 20:35

Sources: 1950-2025 averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) for temperatures, rainfall and the sea; sunrise and sunset times are an astronomical calculation for Istanbul (UTC+3). These are averages: on heat-wave days temperatures clearly exceed 30 °C, and the humidity makes the heat feel heavier than the thermometer shows. Plan the day in three parts: outdoor sights in the morning, museums and a break in the middle of the day, then a walk and dinner outside from 18:00. Drink plenty: most residents drink bottled water, see tap water in Istanbul.

Crowds and prices in July

July is, with October, the most visited month: according to the provincial directorate of culture and tourism, Istanbul welcomed nearly 1.9 million foreign visitors in July 2025. Queues are long at the major sights, and hotel prices are at their highest of the year. At weekends, residents also leave the city for the sea, which loads the roads to the Black Sea. Come early, avoid Friday midday at Hagia Sophia and book tickets online when a ticket office exists; see avoiding queues and travel budget.
