August weather: hot, humid and dry

Swimming along the Bosphorus in summer

1950-2025 averages August in Istanbul
Average high 29.7 °C
Average low 20.8 °C
Rainfall 24 mm, about 4 rainy days
Sea of Marmara 24.2 °C (1970-2025 average)

Source: Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), averages published for Istanbul. These are averages: in a heatwave the thermometer goes well above 30 °C, and nights stay warm, around 21 °C. Short thunderstorms are possible but rare. The hardest part is the humidity, especially in the narrow streets of the old city; the Bosphorus breeze, on the other hand, cools ferries and waterfronts.

Crowds and prices in August

August is peak season: in 2025 Istanbul received nearly 1.9 million foreign visitors in July, according to the provincial culture and tourism directorate's statistics, against 1.2 million in February. Queues build at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı from the morning, and hotels are expensive, especially in Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu. To pay less, compare the less touristy districts in our guide where to stay in Istanbul, and check for air conditioning before booking: it matters in August. Our guide to avoiding queues lists the quietest slots. For the overall budget, see the Istanbul travel budget.

Events in August

Free municipal festivals: mid-August and late August

According to the 2026 programme of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB Kültür), several free festivals fill the end of summer: the Istanbul Percussion Days on 14-16 August, the Digital Art and Electronic Music Festival on 15-16 August, the International Istanbul Vocal Days on 24-26 August, and the travelling children's film festival, from August to September. Venues are published by the municipality a few days before each festival. These are 2026 dates; the 2027 calendar remains to be confirmed. Our festival calendar places these events in the year.

Victory Day: 30 August

30 August is a national holiday commemorating the victory of Dumlupınar in 1922. It falls on a Sunday in 2026 and on a Monday in 2027, which makes a three-day weekend for Turks: trains, roads to the coast and seaside hotels are packed. Banks and government offices are closed; tourist sites and restaurants in central districts generally stay open, but check each monument's hours. All holidays are in our guide to public holidays and bayrams. No religious bayram falls in August in 2026 or 2027.

What to wear in August

  • Light cotton or linen clothes that dry quickly.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen: the sun is strong between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Mosque-appropriate clothing: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a headscarf for women; keep a light scarf and thin trousers in your bag. See visiting a mosque in Istanbul.
  • Comfortable sandals for the cobblestones, and a water bottle (tap water is not drinkable, see water in Istanbul).
  • A swimsuit for the islands and beaches.

  • Kilyos, on the Black Sea: swimming is supervised from mid-June to mid-September; allow 1.5 to 2 hours from Taksim. The water is cooler and currents can be strong.
