Crowds and prices in September

September remains a busy month, a notch below July and August: queues stay long at the major monuments, especially at weekends. The back-to-school season changes the city's rhythm. Schools in Turkey reopen on Monday 14 September 2026 according to the Ministry of National Education calendar (orientation classes for preschool and first grade run 7-11 September), which makes public transport busier at rush hour. Hotels stay expensive early in the month, then prices ease. Our guide where to stay in Istanbul compares districts, and the travel budget gives the orders of magnitude.

What changes in September

  • Ferries switch to the winter timetable: Şehir Hatları introduced its winter timetables on 7 September 2026. Check the last departures before a day on the Princes' Islands: in 2026, the last return from Büyükada to Kadıköy and Kabataş was at 21:45 (9:45 p.m.) Monday to Saturday.
  • Supervised swimming ends: at Kilyos, lifeguards are on duty from mid-June to mid-September.
  • The sea is still good: at 22 °C on average, it is still fine for swimming at the beaches on the Sea of Marmara.
