1991-2020 normals January in Istanbul
Average daily maximum 8.8 to 9.2 °C
Average daily minimum 3.6 to 3.7 °C
Precipitation 72 to 96 mm
Days with precipitation 17 to 18 days
Days with snow 3 to 5 days

Sources: 1991-2020 normals from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) at the Florya (Marmara Sea side) and Kireçburnu (Bosphorus side) stations; values vary from one district to another. The north wind (poyraz) makes the air colder on the quays and on the Bosphorus, and snow, when it falls, rarely lasts more than a few days: follow the forecast in the days before you leave. The sun sets around 5 pm: start outdoor visits in the morning.

Crowds and prices in January

After New Year, visitor numbers drop. Major monuments such as Hagia Sophia or the Basilica Cistern are quieter than the rest of the year, especially on weekdays and at opening time. Hotels are cheaper than in late December; rates rise slightly during the Turkish school holidays (see below). Our guide where to stay in Istanbul compares the districts, and the Istanbul travel budget gives price levels. For the holidays themselves, see Christmas and New Year in Istanbul.

Dates to know in January 2027

  • Friday 1 January: New Year's Day. National holiday: banks and public offices close, and some monuments or museums have special hours; check before you go. The list of national holidays is in our public holidays and bayrams.
  • Monday 25 January to Friday 5 February: mid-year break in Turkish schools. According to the Ministry of National Education (MEB) calendar for 2026-2027, the first term ends on Friday 22 January and the second begins on Monday 8 February. Turkish families travel: children's museums and indoor amusement parks are busier.
  • No major festival. The city's big cultural events take place in spring, summer and autumn: see the festival calendar.

Ramadan 2027 only starts in February: see what to do in Istanbul in February.

What to wear in January

  • Layers: warm base layer, sweater, then a waterproof, windproof jacket.
  • Waterproof shoes with good grip: the cobblestones of Sultanahmet, Balat and Galata are slippery in the rain.
  • Hat, scarf and gloves for the quays and ferries.
  • Thick socks: shoes come off in mosques; see visiting a mosque in Istanbul.
  • A small, sturdy umbrella that can stand up to the wind.

Best things to do in January

Museums and monuments

A Turkish bath in Istanbul, the Çemberlitaş Hamamı

January is a good month for museums: the Archaeological Museum, the Pera Museum, Istanbul Modern, the Sakıp Sabancı Museum or the Rahmi M. Koç Museum for families. Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays and part of the visit is outdoors: choose a dry day. Our guide what to do in Istanbul when it rains completes the list.

Hammams, tea houses and dervishes

Sema ceremony of the whirling dervishes

The Bosphorus and the ferries

Public ferries run in winter (see transport in Istanbul) and a crossing on a clear day remains one of the city's finest outings. Tourist cruises are fewer and crossings can be delayed or cancelled by storms or fog; see the page on the Bosphorus cruise.

At the table

Boza and salep warm you up, lentil soups are served in the lokanta, and seasonal fish fills the restaurants: see what to eat in Istanbul.

Day trips in January

Longer day trips are possible, but short days and changeable weather make them less pleasant than in spring. The Princes' Islands are deserted and cool; Bursa and Iznik can be visited under cover, see the Bursa excursion. To compare the options, read excursions from Istanbul.
